I’ve pondered why the church has not had a greater effect on the direction of America today. Based on history, it’s clear that the church had a much greater effect on politics in the earlier history of America. Why isn’t the church having a greater effect today?
First, Jesus taught love, forgiveness, sacrifice, unity and humility. One thing that immediately jumps out is that the church has overlooked these professed virtues to some extent, while giving much attention to non-essential denominational differences. The church needs to fight the enemies of the gospel and not fellow Christians. Unity generates power while disunity weakens.
Second, through all the comforts and distractions of America it appears that spiritual apathy has set in among many believers. Modern society provides many conveniences and secular entertainment; thus, less dependence on God for one’s needs.
Third, the voice of the church has become almost silent in its public proclamation against sin while many are going to hell and society crumbles. Many Christians have become indifferent while the secular world mocks the truth, robs freedoms, and claims more converts for itself.
There needs to be repentance, commitment, prayer and adjustment of priorities in the American church today. Christians need to work together, and remember that they are to be a light throughout all society. The body as a whole should not leave all the work to just a “few” but should all get involved and use their talents and resources to exalt Jesus Christ in America.
